The U.S. census just released 2017 state to state migration figures, which I have turned into the graph attached. It seems people mostly move to CA for jobs, and leave CA for jobs, more affordable cost of living (mostly housing), and/or lower state income tax rates. There is a lot of traffic to and fro the various high-tech centers around the country, but domestically speaking, more people are leaving than arriving.
