"Sleepy Hollow Living" - A Letter From The Trustee

It was the summer of 1976 and my family of city folk moved our lives in to the beautiful hamlet of Sleepy Hollow. I was 12 yrs. old. I lived in a house with a pool in my backyard and horses at the end of our road! The life I was so upset to leave behind disappeared in an afternoon. Our first night at the house I remember the five of us huddled together, hearts pounding, terrified of what kind of animal could make that horrific growling noise in the huge Monterey Cypress tree outside our kitchen window. I’ve never been so excited! We lived in the country now! I didn’t even care that I had to share a room with my sister! I started junior high that Fall at Hidden Valley Middle School, rode my bike to school every day, became class President, joined the basketball team, had my first kiss and began friendships still existing 46 years later.

Growing up In Sleepy Hollow was freedom and the feeling of being safe. It was about riding bikes, riding horses, swimming, hiking, warm nights, barbecues, pool parties and slumber parties outside under the stars! I had deer that slept on the front lawn, racoons and ducks that swam in the pool, foxes that peeked through the sliding glass doors at us, hummingbirds that swarmed around us as we lounged on the deck and the daily quail pilgrimage across the back fence. However, the most exciting aspect of the neighborhood was the absence of streetlights making summer nights nothing short of adventurous.

My most cherished memories were returning from a long bike ride, jumping in the pool and then relaxing poolside with my parents. After working all day in the garden, my dad would emerge from his workshop with a piece of wood he used as a cutting board and his swiss army knife then he’d proceed to slice up tomatoes from his garden together with a block of cheese and a good bottle of wine. We’d sit out there until the sun went down talking and laughing. Regardless of how old I was my mom would never fail to walk with me out to my car, insist on putting mad money into my pocket and then ask me if I had a sweater for the cool evening. Driving away, she’d always be on that front porch, waving goodbye. One of hundreds of memories at this house seared into my mind… priceless.

19 Tappan Road was home. We had everything we needed in and around this house. My parents gave us one of the greatest gifts of all which was being blessed to have grown up in the Hollow.

Memories of my family home - A letter from daughter, Carla

My parents were both born and raised in San Francisco, the land of fog and foghorns. As young adults, they both enjoyed the warm weather and all it had to offer. They would venture across the Golden Gate Bridge every weekend to the Marin Town and Country Club, located in the little town

of Fairfax. They spent their weekend's swimming, playing volleyball, and socializing with their friends in the warm glow of the sun. Sometimes they stayed overnight in the cabins they had onsite. Eventually, they had to return to the City.

After getting married and having three children they continued their love for the sunshine that Marin County had to offer. They found the Las Gallinas Swim and Racquet Club located in San Rafael and we went as a family every weekend to enjoy the swimming pools, tennis courts, and tennis lessons and the

overall feeling of being on a little mini vacation every weekend away from the cold and foggy mist of the City.

Fast forward to 1976 when my parents decided it was time to move from the Big City with its cold weather to a warmer climate and a city that had more of a small town feel and sense of community. They decided to look in several cities which included San Mateo, Burlingame, and Palo Alto. Not one

house excited them, so they switched gears and headed to Marin County looking at over 12 houses inFairfax, San Rafael, Kentfield, and Novato. Still nothing sparked their interest until that one day they walked into:

19 Tappan Rd.

It was an instantaneous reaction – LOVE! It felt like home in that very first meeting. This house would be theirs! They were so excited to begin this new chapter in their lives.

My mother and father adored their new home. Everyday felt like a vacation to them. This is what they had dreamed about for their family. The garden and its grounds were Dad’s pride and joy and Mom loved decorating her new home with exciting treasures she would find in the local antique shops. Everyone loved coming to our house for celebrations. Mom and Dad were the ultimate host and hostess and loved entertaining. It was such a perfect outdoor setting for every family reunion, Easter and Easter egg hunts, Fourth of July celebrations, Labor Day BBQ’s complete with a cook and a live band, birthdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was always just perfect. My wedding photos were taken here and some of my most cherished photos are the ones that were taken in the garden and sitting by the windows with the majestic outdoor view from the Master Bedroom. My children learned to swim in the pool in the backyard and spent their summer months here catching ladybugs, “camping” in the backyard and just enjoying the warm summer nights. My parents were so very fortunate to have found their dream home. We as a family were also very fortunate to have grown up in such a wonderful home and community.

I have so many beautiful memories about life at 19 Tappan Rd. I could certainly fill a novel with all of them. Those wonderful memories will never fade. That is the beauty of a memory. Now it is time for a new chapter to be written, written by a new family who will live in their dream home, make unforgettable and everlasting memories, and appreciate all the beauty and charm this home has to offer.
